The Safe Environment Policy was created to take reasonable measures to assure that Church personnel who have regular contact with minors are committed to providing a safe environment for children.
The Safe Environments Policy applies to all Church personnel who have regular contact with minors. Church personnel is defined as all adult persons (those 18 years of age or older), whether clergy, members of consecrated life, or laity, who, as employees or volunteers, act in the name of the Church under the auspices of the Diocese of Pittsburgh or one of its parishes.
SAFE ENVIRONMENT REQUIREMENTS (CLEARANCES)
The Diocese of Pittsburgh requires that all volunteers in ministry with children comply with the Safe Environment Policy. It includes the following components:
Diocesan Database and PA Criminal Record Check
Pastoral Code of Conduct
Child Protective Services Law Acknowledgement and Forms
PA Child Abuse History
Protecting God's Children Workshop
STEP 1. DIOCESAN ONLINE DATABASE
All adults (18 and older) who have regular contact with minors are to complete the Diocese of Pittsburgh's database application. Once this application is completed, it will also be used to automatically obtain a Pennsylvania State Police Criminal Record Check*. This will then be printed by the school and placed in your file.
STEP 2. PA CHILD ABUSE HISTORY CLEARANCE*
Once your database application is completed and submitted, please call the school to request a consent release form and application for the PA Child Abuse History Clearance. This consent form allows the state to send the form directly to St. Alphonsus School. The parents are asked to voluntarily cover the cost of the clearance. After filling in and signing the forms, send the form with $10.00 payment made out to St. Alphonsus School. The school will send for the clearance. You may choose to not sign the consent form and mail the payment directly to the state. However, this will increase the time it takes to get the form to the school and complete the requirements to volunteer.
STEP 3. REQUIRED DOCUMENTS
Please read, print the last page, and sign the following documents and return to the school.
STEP 4. PROTECTING GOD'S CHILDREN
The "Protecting God's Children" workshop is required for all adults, age 18 and up, who wish to volunteer in ministry with children. These workshops are offered at various sites throughout the Diocese.
Upon completion of the workshop, please provide a copy of the course completion certificate to the school office.
Thank you so much for all you do for the Church, and for helping to ensure that our parishes, schools and ministries are safe environments for our children.
*Please Note That the PA Criminal Background Check and PA Child Abuse Clearance must be renewed every 5 years.
